Hello friends,
The sun is shining today. What a welcome change after two weeks of cloudy drizzle. I don’t know about you, but lately I feel really tired. Even more so than during lockdown. In Switzerland the stores and cafés and pools (yay!) reopened a couple of weeks ago. The city centre and streets are getting busier by the day, with many workers returning to office life.
There is a palpable sense of relief in the air as we can finally re-connect (at a socially safe distance) for face-to-face chats over coffee or a shared meal, and get back to some semblance of routine outside the home.
For me, this shift back to normal life (if we can call it that) comes with mixed emotions. Much as I don’t wish a return to lockdown anytime soon, there was something deeply healing about the slower pace we were obliged to follow during the worst of the crisis. Having externally enforced restrictions in place on doing things, or going places, gave us permission be present in the here and now.
We saw that productivity can be maintained while working remotely. Human connection is still possible through modern technology. The speed of adaptation to new ways of interacting, or delivering services, is astounding.
With the easing of lockdown restrictions, I wonder what will happen next? Will we be able to hold on to those pockets of good that arose from the pandemic? The abundance of kindness for one another at the community level? The collective call for hope, from one side of the globe to the other? Will we experience relief or trauma as we begin to process this seismic event?
In the meantime, all we can do is keep going—just as we did through the worst of the crisis. With that in mind, our Inspiration Collection this week is designed to remind us of what’s possible when we continue to show up, no matter what is happening around us.
With love,
Aimée
How One Small Act Made the Impossible Possible
A little over a year ago, I made the decision to try something new: to explore new territory and confront one of my old fears head-on. At the time, I had no idea how much a relatively small act could dramatically influence my life—and transform what, at first, seemed impossible into a new reality.
Technology As a Force For Good
It’s hard to ignore the pace of technological disruption out there and, in particular, its impact on humanity. As a data scientist, Imai Jen-La Plante sits in the eye of the storm. In this conversation, we discuss the unparalleled influence of digital technology in shaping our perception of the world, for better or worse—and the importance of building diversity into the foundational algorithms that define our modern-day human experience.
